Trade the coral reefs of the Red Sea for the legendary history of the Mediterranean with this Alexandria Day Trip from Sharm El Sheikh. Known as the city of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra, Alexandria offers a completely different vibe from the rest of Egypt. It is a city of stories, where ancient Roman catacombs sit beneath bustling streets and the modern Library of Alexandria pays homage to ancient knowledge.
Early Morning: The Journey North Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh to transfer to the airport. You will board a short domestic flight (approx. 60 minutes) to Cairo. Upon landing, your private guide and driver will welcome you for the scenic drive to Alexandria (approx. 2.5 to 3 hours). The drive takes you through the Nile Delta, offering a glimpse of Egypt’s lush agricultural heartland—a stark contrast to the desert Sinai.
Morning: Into the Ancient Underworld Arriving in Alexandria, your first stop is the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. You will descend a spiral staircase into the earth to explore three levels of tombs, tricliniums, and statues that uniquely mix Egyptian gods with Roman military dress—a true symbol of Alexandria's cosmopolitan history. Next, you will visit Pompey’s Pillar, a towering red granite column rising from the ruins of the ancient Serapeum.
Mid-Day: Fortresses & Feasts You will then head to the coastline to view the majestic Citadel of Qaitbay. While you may not explore every inch of the interior depending on time, the panoramic views from the courtyard are breathtaking. You are standing where the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria once guided ships. For lunch, enjoy a classic Alexandrian experience: a fresh Seafood Lunch at a restaurant with sea views. Relax, enjoy the Mediterranean breeze, and taste the culinary difference of the north.
Afternoon: Modern Wonders & Return Your final major stop is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Library of Alexandria). You will admire its incredible architecture, shaped like a rising sun disc, and tour the exterior plaza (and public interior areas if time permits). It is a striking contrast to the ancient ruins you saw earlier. As the afternoon concludes, you will begin the drive back to Cairo airport for your return flight to Sharm El Sheikh. Your driver will meet you at Sharm airport to transfer you back to your hotel, tired but filled with stories of a different Egypt.
