While the GEM holds the treasures of Tutankhamun, the Royal Mummies have a different home. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and Citadel Tour is the only way to see the bodies of the Pharaohs face-to-face, paired with a visit to Cairo’s most famous fortress.
Morning: Kings and Queens We head to Fustat to visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). This modern museum tells the story of Egypt from pre-history to today, but the main attraction is the Royal Mummies Hall. Here, you will walk through a tomb-like majestic corridor to see the incredibly preserved bodies of 22 ancient Kings and Queens, displayed with dignity and respect.
Afternoon: The Islamic Skyline We continue to the Citadel of Saladin. You will explore the massive defensive walls and the Mosque of Mohamed Ali, which dominates Cairo’s skyline. We also visit the lesser-known but beautiful green-domed Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad. We end the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and Citadel Tour on the terrace, looking out over the sprawling city to the Pyramids in the distance.
Q: Can I see mummies at the GEM? No, the Royal Mummies are exclusively at the NMEC. The GEM focuses on artifacts and tombs.
Q: Are photos allowed? Photos are allowed in the main museum but strictly forbidden inside the Royal Mummies Hall.
